In our eyes, there’s no doubt that all dogs are good dogs. From giant Great Danes to pint-sized Chihuahuas, each breed has its own strengths, weaknesses, and lovable quirks. Each of their traits is just another reason why we love them. So far, we’ve looked at the most obedient dog breeds, the strongest dog breeds, the most expensive dog breeds, and more. But have you ever wondered what the friendliest dog breed is?
While there’s no single breed that’s been officially classified as the friendliest, there are plenty who are known for their bubbly personalities. Here are some of the friendliest dog breeds in the world.
What’s the friendliest dog breed? Here are our top 10
#1: Golden Retriever
It’s really no surprise that the Golden Retriever tops our list, right? Golden by name and golden by nature, these sweet pups are just as friendly as they are beautiful. In fact, they consistently rank in the top 10 most popular dog breeds around the world for their gentle demeanour, warm smile, and sociable personalities.
The quintessential family dog, the Golden has long been a hit with young families thanks to its fun-loving, friendly temperament. That said, they do require lots of physical activity and mental stimulation, so it might be worth enlisting the help of a local Dog Walker.
#2: Bichon Frise
If you prefer your four-legged bestie a little more pocket-sized, the Bichon Frise is a fantastic option. Don’t let their short stature fool you – these fluffy cuties have big personalities. They’re entertainers at heart, and any Bichon Owner will tell you there are no dull moments with these furballs around!
Bichon Frises are also considered a hypoallergenic breed as their silky, curly coat essentially doesn’t shed. Still, like any long-coated breed, regular brushing and professional grooming is a must in order to keep them looking and feeling their usual fabulous self.
#3: Boxer
A name like “Boxer” makes them sound pretty tough, but these pups are really just big, friendly goofballs. In fact, all they really want is to have fun with you! They’re energetic, playful, and can usually be seen sporting a big, dopey smile. Loyalty is one of their key traits, and the more attention you give them, the more they’ll stick by you.
Boxers can make perfect pets for families with older children thanks to their desire to play for hours on end. But it’s important to keep in mind that, while they may act like lap dogs, they’re big and strong. To ensure they don’t become too boisterous and overpowering, early training is essential.
#4: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Not only is the King Charles Spaniel one of the calmest dog breeds, they’re also one of the friendliest dog breeds. Originating in early 18th century England, these gorgeous lap dogs have stolen millions of hearts with their laidback, gentle nature.
If you’re after a furry friend you can chill on the couch with rather than run laps with, the Cavalier is for you. Even if you live in an apartment, these easy-going and relatively low energy pups can fit into just about any household. If you’re after a non-shedding breed with a Cav’s chilled-out vibe, it’s also worth considering a cavoodle.
#5: Beagle
Believed to have originated waaay back in the 11th century, the Beagle is just as beloved today as it was hundreds of years ago. With their classic good looks, trainability and intelligence, perfect size, and kind disposition, it’s no wonder we love them so much. And luckily for us, they love people, too!
The only thing that Beagles love more than people, however, is food. Without careful supervision, they’ve been known to steal many a meal. To avoid obesity, it’s essential to feed them a healthy, portion-controlled diet and give them lots of daily exercise.
#6: Samoyed
They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to the Samoyed, that judgement is pretty spot on. With their oh-so-soft fur and a smile that only a monster could say no to, these cloud-like pups have exploded in popularity in recent years. Meet one in person, and you’ll know exactly why. These fluffy social butterflies make friends wherever they go.
Bear in mind, though, that the Samoyed’s coat, while adorable, isn’t built for Australia’s hot climate. As such, it’s essential to monitor them closely in summer to ensure they don’t overheat. Some air conditioning and a few frozen dog treats are sure to do the trick.
#7: Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Staffies have had a bit of a bad rap over the years, but behind all the preconceived notions is a lovable, loyal, and kind soul. They may look tough, but like all dogs, Staffies just want to love and be loved. And who couldn’t love a pup with a smile that big?
As with any breed, the temperament of a Staffy is highly dependent on how they’re treated by their owner. They’ve got a naturally friendly disposition, so showering them with affection and unconditional love is only going to make them even friendlier.
#8: Pug
If there’s one thing Pugs are great at, it’s making friends. They’re funny, entertaining, playful, and most Pug Owners will tell you they’re the friendliest dog breed without a doubt. Hailing from China, where they were first bred in ancient times as companion dogs, these pooches are the very definition of happy-go-lucky.
Prospective Owners should keep in mind that, as they’re a brachycephalic breed, Pugs can be prone to airway issues. However, with proper care, nutrition, and exercise, they can live a long and healthy life.
#9: Labrador
Kind eyes, adorable smile, waggy tail – there’s no denying Labradors are cute. But they’re more than just good looks! Originating as retrieving dogs in Newfoundland, Labs quickly took the world by storm. Nowadays, you can hardly visit a dog park without seeing at least one of these friendly faces.
A testament to Labradors’ friendliness is their use time and time again as assistance dogs. They’re so trainable and trustworthy that they’ve become basically synonymous with guide dogs. But even when they’re not on the clock, these pups make for some of the best friends anyone could hope for.
#10: Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Long-time favourite of Queen Elizabeth II, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s trademark trait is loyalty. Though they’ve often been used as herding and guard dogs in the past, that doesn’t stop them wanting to make friends along the way. They love to be with their Owners and tend to follow wherever it is they’re going.
Corgis are incredibly sociable, but thanks to their working dog origins, they have been known to nip at heels. Basically, they’re trying to herd you! They can be trained not to do this, but it’s important to keep in mind – especially with children in the house.
Do you think your pup deserves the title of the friendliest dog breed?
The list above is by no means exhaustive, so we’d love to hear if you think we’ve left any breed out! After all, no two dogs – not even those within the same breed – have the exact same personalities. You might occasionally stumble upon a not-so-friendly Beagle or perhaps a highly sociable Shar Pei! Tell us in the comments below what you think the friendliest dog breed is.

I believe a Kelpie should be on the list of best dogs. They are so loyal, quick to learn, energetic and loving.
Thank you for including staffies in there. They really are just big muscly babies and are often misunderstood! Solid obedience and a loving home is all they need. ❤️
