Let’s face it: a delicious Valentine’s Day treat is the best part of this love-filled holiday. Sure, the flowers are nice… but your favourite chocolate will always be a winner.
While your pup may not be able to help you polish off your box of heart-shaped chocolate, we’re here with a few Valentine’s treat recipes they’ll drool over!
If your pup isn’t a great help in the kitchen, you might book them a special date with their favourite Pet Sitter while you put these together.
Cranberry kisses
- 1 cup of whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup of whole rolled oats
- 1/2 cup of fresh cranberries (you can substitute raspberries and still achieve that quintessential Valentine’s treat aesthetic!)
- 8 ounces of mashed sweet potato (pumpkin or squash puree make great substitutes, here!)
- 4 to 8 fluid ounces of vegetable or chicken stock
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 180°C and prepare a cookie sheet with baking paper.
In a large bowl, mix the mashed sweet potato and about half of the stock. Add in the flour, oats, and cranberries and combine to form a soft dough.
If the dough is too dry, add in additional stock until you get a cookie-dough consistency.
Using a spoon, scoop a small mound of dough and shape into a ball in your palm. You’ll place these on your prepared cookie sheet and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes until the treats are nice and crunchy!
Allow to cool and store any leftover Valentine’s treat kisses in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a week.
Watermelon hearts
- 1 watermelon, cut into rounds
- Heart-shaped cookie cutter
Instructions:
We can’t think of an easier Valentine’s treat idea than this! Simply chill your watermelon, slice into rounds, and then cut out Valentine’s hearts. Make sure to remove the seeds before tossing a few to your doggo.
Watermelon heart pupsicles
Here’s the next-step-up version of Valentine’s watermelon hearts!
- 1 cup of watermelon, cut into small chunks and seeds removed
- 1/2 cup of unsweetened Greek yoghurt
- 1 teaspoon of honey or preferred dog-safe sweetener
- Heart-shaped ice tray
Instructions:
Combine all ingredients in a blender until you get a smooth, pourable mixture. If your mixture is too thick, add in a bit more yoghurt or water.
Pour the mixture into your ice tray and freeze for 2 to 3 hours. Once the pupcicles are set, this cooling Valentine’s treat is ready to enjoy!
Iced peanut butter cookies
If you’re looking for the dog-friendly version of a Valentine’s treat classic, here’s your go-to:
- 1 cup of all-natural peanut butter
- 1 medium egg
- 2 tablespoons of honey or dog-friendly sweetener
- 2 to 2 ½ cups of flour
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 8 fluid ounces of water
- Dog-friendly white chocolate candy melts (make sure that they do not contain xylitol)
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 180°C and prepare a cookie sheet with baking paper.
In a large bowl, combine the egg, peanut butter, and honey. Stir in the water, and then add in flour and baking powder slowly until you get a rollable dough.
Sprinkle your workspace with flour and roll out the dough to about 5mm. With the Valentine’s cookie cutter of your choice—hearts, arrows, lips, you name it—cut out the cookies and transfer to the cookie sheet.
Bake for 20 minutes and cool completely.
Once the cookies are cool, heat your white chocolate melts as indicated on the package. Because white chocolate melts can be high in fat and sugar, we suggest dipping only about half of each Valentine’s treat in the melted white chocolate.
These treats are decadent, so enjoy in moderation!
Smooching smoothie
- 1 fresh beet, chopped
- 1 carrot, chopped
- 2 handfuls of spinach
- ½ cup of frozen dog-safe berries (blueberries or raspberries are a good choice!)
- Unsweetened apple juice, about a cup or enough to cover the other ingredients
Instructions:
If you have a high speed or powerful blender, then whipping up this smoothie is as easy as throwing in all the ingredients and pressing a button.
If you don’t have a high-speed blender, you’ll want to soften the beets and carrots in a microwave or steamer and then cool before blending.
This ruby red Valentine’s treat is so delicious that you can split it with your beloved pup! Or, serve in two servings—especially if your doggo isn’t accustomed to eating leafy greens.
