Are you planning on bringing home a pint-sized furry friend? To ensure you’re ready, we’ve prepared our top tips for Puppy Owners!
1. Puppy proof your home
Just like with a new baby, your new puppy needs a place where they can explore, safe from any harm. Start by removing any plants that are toxic to dogs, tuck away electrical cords and remove everything that they could potentially chew (especially your favourite boots!).
2. Show them affection
If you want your pup to grow into a sociable, affectionate dog, interacting with them when they’re young is critical. Sit on the floor with them and show them it’s ok to touch their paws, rub their belly, look inside their ears and play. If you’re busy during the day, book Pet Day Care so your pup keeps receiving affection through the day whilst you’re away.
3. Start feeding them the right diet
By giving them the right food from the start, you’re getting into a good habit and protecting your furball from future digestive issues.
4. Reward good behaviour
Puppies will always be a little mischievous but it’s important to start rewarding them whenever they do something good. This will help them to understand – and most importantly learn – how to become a “good dog”!
5. Early socialisation is key
You don’t want a dog who can’t make friends at the park, so the best way to avoid this is to expose them to new places, people and pooches. Learn about how to socialise your pup here.
6. First visit to the Vet
Taking your puppy to the vet is one of the first things you should do when you bring them home. Your vet checks your pup’s development and keeps you informed about vaccinations, flea control and more. Make sure you set an appointment with your vet before taking your pup places with other dogs.
7. Start potty training
Your puppy doesn’t have good bladder or sphincter control yet. Take advantage of their regular need to pee and start training them to go outside! Take them out immediately after feeding and every 30 mins – 1 hour throughout the day to give them a chance to go. Give lots of praise when they do their business outside.
8. Have fun and take lots of photos
Dogs grow faster than humans so you actually only have a few months to enjoy this wonderful puppy stage. Take lots of photos and if you haven’t already, follow us on Instagram and tag us in your photos, we wanna see the puppy cuteness!
By applying these tips for Puppy Owners, you’ll give your puppy the best possible start in life. Good luck!
