The Ragdoll seal point cat is one of the most stunning feline breeds, known for its striking blue eyes and luxurious coat.
As one of the most popular colourations in the Ragdoll family, the seal point variation is marked by dark points on the face, ears, paws, and tail, set against a lighter body. But beyond their beautiful appearance, these cats have distinct personality traits and specific nutritional needs.
Let’s dive into some fun facts about the Ragdoll seal point cat and how to best care for their unique needs with tailored nutrition, exercise and overall healthcare.
What makes a Ragdoll seal point cat unique?
1. They’re considered the puppy of the cat world
Ragdoll seal point cats are renowned for their docile and loving personalities. They’re often referred to as “puppy-like” due to their tendency to follow their Owner around and their love for cuddling. Unlike some independent cat breeds, Ragdolls crave human interaction and enjoy being part of the family.
They even enjoy a game of fetch and are one of the breeds often seen walking down the street on a leash! Don’t be fooled, however, as they’re still very keen to lounge around for the majority of the day. With that said, this is an important consideration when it comes to their diet. More on that later…
2. Their fur colouring is temperature controlled
Due to a complex genetic mutation, a Ragdoll cat’s colouration is dependent on its body temperature in certain areas. The lower the temperature on a particular body area, the darker the fur. This means that its extremities – such as paws and ear tips – will gradually go darker, while the warmer areas such as the trunk stay lighter.
Furthermore, if they’re exposed to different climates throughout their life, they’ll continue to change colour! For example, in a hotter climate, your Ragdoll cat may get lighter, whereas in colder climates, the colour tends to darken. It all depends on how the weather affects your kitty’s body temperature. A very unique ability!
3. They’re known to ‘reverse age’
Similarly to their ability to change colour due to their temperature sensitivity, they also change colour with age. If you bring a Ragdoll seal point cat into your family from a kitten age, you’ll notice their points gradually getting darker as they get older.
As with human hair, animals tend to go grey as they get older. A Ragdoll cat, however, is the opposite! As their metabolism gradually decreases through the years, their extremities will get even darker.
Fun Ragdoll seal point cat fact: Global singing superstar Taylor Swift adopted a Ragdoll seal point cat in 2019 and named him Benjamin Button. We’re going to put the name down to the fact that he’s reverse ageing – just like the main character in the movie of the same name. Thanks to Tay tay’s love of cats, this breed is now immortalised on the cover of TIME magazine!
