This year’s results stem from a database of over 500,000 Australian pets. Did Aussies stray away from the traditional four-legged-friend names, or are we breaking new ground with any unique names that we grace our human offspring with?

Although many classic canine names remain within the top 10 list each year, there has been some significant movement as well as a few newcomers joining the ranks this time. But which male pet name has reigned supreme? We’re happy to see one from the history books (and movies) has jumped from #4 last year to now taking out position #1.

Now for the girls. For six consecutive years in a row, the name Bella claimed the title of Australia’s most popular dog name (with the exception of Victoria, where Charlie proved to be the #1 top dog name. Alas, in this new year, Bella has been knocked from ‘top dog’ status.

Compared to previous years, the popularity of pop culture-inspired names saw a decline. Aside from a couple of notable names, it’s clear that some of the oldies are still goodies.
Thanks to the recent remake of Disney classic, The Lion King, the name Nala sits pretty as #7 – and we’re sure it will remain popular in Australia for some time.
