Christmas wouldn’t be complete without Christmas cats. They attack our Christmas trees. They look adorably upset in their festive outfits. They star in some of our favourite Christmas movies. The holiday season would be absolutely boring without them.
This year, we’re taking the time to appreciate Christmas cats across the internet, on the big screen, and right in your own home. So jingle some bells (cats love that!) and get ready for a Meow-y Christmas!
2021 is full of Tiktok cats!
Covid may have tried to dash our Christmas cheer. But then, like Santa’s reindeer delivering toys to the world, viral Tiktoks of Christmas cats saved the season!
So to start us off with the Best Christmas cats of the year, here are a few Tiktok famous felines:
1. Furryfritz
Based in Langenfeld, Germany, Cat Owner Nils Jacobi has made his career as a Cat Content Creator. With amazing photography and videography, he captures the life of his four beautiful felines.
But around Christmas time is when you’re really in for a holiday treat! His behind-the-scenes Christmas card Tiktok video has been viewed over 8 million times, and just might inspire you to up your DIY holiday cards.
2. Khaleesi Cat
Whilst GoT is so last year! Its legacy lives on in Khaleesi and Drogo Cat! 🐲😻
It’s not just the Tiktok meow-fluencers who are making this Christmas special. The Instagram Christmas cats are also bringing the festive spirit this year!
3. Nala Cat
There are famous Christmas cats, and then there’s Nala, the holder of the Guinness World Record for most famous cat on Instagram! What kind of gift do you get for a cat with this level of fame? Considering that Nala loves dressing up for holidays, we and her other 4.3 million followers are hoping that it’s a new outfit. Her Santa’s Helper costume this year was too cute for words!
4. Animal Welfare League NSW
Whoever is running the AWL NSW Instagram account knows exactly what the people want: cat-themed Christmas memes, clever cat Christmas cards, and adoptable kitties who are looking to spend their Christmas with a new family!
We can’t think of a better way to celebrate Christmas than by snuggling a new cat.
Movies
Before there were social media Christmas cats, there were Christmas meow-vie stars! In between your favourite holiday movies, make sure to squeeze in these big screen feline films:
5. Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever
Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever was written for those of us who identify more with Scrooge than with Rudolph. A true ode to the cat who gave us years of endearingly unamused looks, Grumpy Cat earned her place in the Christmas cats hall-of-fame with this film.
6. The Aristocats
Is the Disney movie featuring a sophisticated Turkish Angora and her cuddly kittens a Christmas classic? Considering that it first premiered the night of Christmas Eve, 1970, we think so!
When it was first released, movie-goers loved this film. It was the perfect lighthearted Christmas showing to pass the evening until it was time to open gifts. And while there are no overt Christmas themes in the movie, those who first watched the film on Christmas Eve will always think of Duchess and her brood as Christmas cats.
Christmas cats who love Christmas traditions
Christmas isn’t just about the feline film actors and fun cat videos set to Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You. It’s also about the Christmas traditions! Here are a few Christmas cats that we can thank for keeping our favourite Christmas traditions alive:
7. Christmas card cats
Australia, like much of the world, has a long-standing tradition of sending Christmas cards to loved ones. Some of them feature our favourite festive foods. Others depict Santa cuddling Koalas or hanging out at the beach. But by far, our favourite ones feature Christmas cats.
From realistic to cartoonish, heart-warming to hilarious, cat-themed Christmas cards are always popular. Even Taylor Swift joined in on the fun this year. Her Christmas cards feature her three furry friends, all dressed up in holiday accessories.
8. Flippy, the original Christmas wrapped cat
You can find tutorials for just about anything on YouTube. And ten years ago, the original How to Wrap a Cat for Christmas tutorial taught us that if you can gift wrap a cat, you can gift wrap anything.
But it’s not just expert cat-wrapping skills that you’ll learn from this video. Flippy’s peaceful demeanor shows that we can all be cool and collected, even when the holiday season gets stressful.
With an impressive 12 million views, this original video inspired Christmas cats worldwide to post their own cat-wrapping videos. Watching all of them is a tradition that we look forward to every year!
Now, is this a waste of gift wrapping paper? Sure. But is it also pointlessly fun and sure to bring a smile to your face? Absolutely! And we could all use some of that this year.
How to get your Christmas cats into the Christmas spirit
Seeing all of these Christmas cats, you might be wondering why your feline friend is determined to be such a Grouch around Christmastime. Luckily, we have a few solutions! Here are some ideas to get your cat on board with the festivities:
- Get some Christmas-themed cat toys. As a Cat Owner, you might think that your cat has a personal vendetta against Christmas trees. Not so! They simply think that you bought them a new cat-tree, complete with exciting new toys. If you want them to steer clear of your gorgeous holiday decorations, invest in some new toys and spend some time playing with them this holiday season.
- If your cat hates dressing up for Christmas, find an alternative. Not all cats will enjoy wearing holiday outfits as much as Nala, and that’s okay! With a festive backdrop and a little photoshop, you can create the perfect cat-themed Christmas card without dressing up your furry friend. And if you feel you must add some kind of Christmaswear to your cat, stick with a formal bow-tie or festive scarf that won’t overwhelm them.
- Traveling for Christmas? Get your cat a holiday buddy. Your feline friend may not know that it’s a holiday, but they still don’t want to be alone for Christmas! If you won’t be home this year, make sure they’re in good hands with their Mad Paws Cat Sitter.
- While you bake up your favourite holiday sweets, take some time to make your cat’s favourite homemade treats! Take a look at our go-to Cat Treat Recipe to whip up some simple, tasty treats that Christmas cats will love. And, don’t worry— they take much less time to make than a pavlova.
With the right encouragement, cats can learn to love Christmas just as much as the rest of us!
Will your cat join the ranks of famous Christmas cats this year? Or are you looking forward to a relaxing holiday for you and your feline?
Whether you spend this holiday season curled up with your cat watching Christmas movies or trying to film their war on the Christmas tree for Tiktok, we wish you the purrfect Christmas.
